Seeeing animals in their natural environment is one of the highlights of travelling, even though it can be challenging to find them. Spotting polar bears in their preferred landscape over a few weeks in October and November, is not as challenging as you might think. Churchill Manitoba is known as the polar bear capital of the world as they gather on the edge of Hudson's Bay waiting for the ice so they can walk out and hunt seals. From the safety of large wheeled vehicles, travellers can watch bears weighing 450 kilograms (1000 pounds) stroll across the yellow tundra, with their noses high in the air sniffing for evidence of other bears. Cubs can be seen frollicking amongst beach boulders as their mother takes a snooze. Other wildlife such as snowy owls and Arctic foxes can pop into view as they search for food or hide from predators. A visit to Churchill can be even more of an adventure if you choose to take the train from Winnipeg, or add excursions such as dog sledding or heli-touring to your days. Some enthusiasts even opt for a hotel on the tundra for the closest proximity to the bears at all hours.
