A Tragic Loss
In 1997, the Golden Spruce met a tragic fate. An environmental activist, in a misguided protest against the logging industry, cut down this scared tree. The loss was more than just the felling of a tree—it was a cultural wound felt deeply by the Haida community and the broader public who had come to admire this unique natural wonder. The act sparked outrage and sorrow, highlighting the delicate balance between activism and respect for cultural heritage.

A Legacy that Lives on
Despite the tragedy, the legacy of the Golden Spruce lives on. Cuttings from the tree were saved and replanted, ensuring that its memory and impact would not be lost. Today, one of these boughs can be seen in Millennium Park in the town of Port Clements, where it stands protected by a fence and marked with a plaque.
