The Alaskan railroad is considered to be the backbone of the Last Frontier, which makes it easy to imagine the early explorers experiencing the same journey along the tracks. Viewing through the glass domed ceiling is exceptional as the height allows travellers to look down and across at the meandering rivers, rugged wilderness, vast forests and grand mountain ranges. The train plies a route through many areas not accessible by road including historic trestle bridges, so train travellers often have photos unlike driving tours. Bears and moose have been spotted through windows as visitors savour the flavours presented in the dining car. The adventure actually begins in Anchorage and stops overnight at the charismatic mining town of Talkeetna. Hopefully the clouds clear the skies surrounding Mount McKinley, North America's tallest peak, in order to capture that first snapshot of the statuesque mountain. The journey continues north to Denali, allowing time for touring through the National Park. Hikers rejoice while others take advantage of a fixed-wing flightseeing tour, rafting or horseback riding. The train tour pulls into its final map marker city of Fairbanks, known for dog mushing, northern lights and its extremes of light, dark, warmth and cold.
